Overview:
Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC), a prominent agency of the Province of Ontario, is seeking a dedicated and versatile Spare Steward/Chef/Server for its On-Board Services team. This full-time position is based in Cochrane, ON, and offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $23.18 to $30.50, with potential increases as per the collective agreement. As a valued member of ONTC, you will be integral to delivering exceptional service on the Polar Bear Express train service and other operational duties within the department.

Key Responsibilities:
- Operational Support: Assist with staffing requirements in the On-Board Services Department, including various roles such as chef, steward, or server. This includes managing the commissary and loading supplies onto the train.
- Food Preparation and Service: Plan, direct, and execute food preparation and serving activities on the Polar Bear Express, which operates between Cochrane and Moosonee. Ensure all food meets quality standards and is prepared and cooked to the highest standards.
- Customer Service: Provide exceptional customer service, including implementing procedures during train delays or service disruptions. As a spare board employee, you will need to be available 2 hours before the train’s scheduled departure.
- Sanitation and Cleanliness: Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in kitchen areas and ensure all dishes and equipment are properly cleaned.
- Flexibility and Availability: Be ready to work on-call, including weekends and statutory holidays, and adapt to various functions and roles as required by the department.
Requirements:
- Education: A Secondary School diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
- Experience: At least three years of cooking experience or two years plus a culinary certificate. Proven ability to handle cash and strong organizational skills are also essential.
- Skills: Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills are crucial. A valid Smart Serve certification is required, and a Certificate in First Aid and Safe Food Handling are considered assets. Fluency in English, French, and Cree is preferred.
- Additional Requirements: Must possess a valid G driver’s license and be committed to Company Health and Safety protocols. Frequent travel on board the train is expected, and flexibility to work varying shifts, including weekends and holidays, is necessary.
