Salary: Grade B16 – $3,482.57 per month (or $3,409.83 for ERS Retiree or non-contributing member)

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) is currently hiring for the position of Legal Assistant I – Section Assistant in Conroe, TX. This role, located within the State Counsel for Offenders unit, involves supporting legal professionals and performing a variety of tasks related to legal work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in legal case preparation and research.
  • Manage legal documentation and maintain filing systems.
  • Perform clerical duties such as typing, data entry, and record-keeping.
  • Translate and interpret Spanish to English and vice versa, if applicable.
  • Assist in calculating inmate time, preferred but not required.
  • Work under the supervision of legal professionals to support various legal proceedings.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Education:
    • Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent (GED).
    • Alternatively, 30 semester hours from a CHEA or USDE accredited college or university can substitute for one year of experience.
    • Graduation from a course of study for legal assistants approved by the American Bar Association or the American Association of Paralegal Education.
  • Experience:
    • At least two years of full-time, wage-earning experience in legal work.
    • Experience in inmate time calculation is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Ability to type at least 45 words per minute with no more than 10 errors preferred.
    • Bilingual skills in Spanish and English are preferred.
