Job Responsibilities:

As a Technical Assistant at McGill University, your key duties will include:

  • Equipment and Supply Management: Maintain an inventory of supplies, instruments, and equipment used in the work area. Compile and manage lists of items that need to be purchased and perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment.
  • Data Handling: Record and enter data into computerized systems. Note and document data from various assays, exhibits, and assemblies, and perform some calculations as required.
  • Material Preparation: Prepare materials, solutions, and equipment needed for laboratory experiments, projects, and other tasks. Assist with preparing, monitoring, inventorying, and preserving culture media.
  • Maintenance and Cleanliness: Ensure cleanliness of work areas and maintain the proper functioning of equipment such as balances, microtomes, microscopes, and centrifuges.
  • Reporting: Complete standard reports and inform the immediate supervisor of any irregularities or defects. Take necessary measures to address any issues that arise.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • Education: A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Experience: At least one year of related experience is preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

To excel in this role, candidates should have:

  1. Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with laboratory and workshop equipment and the ability to perform minor repairs and maintenance.
  2. Data Management: Strong skills in recording, entering, and modifying data using computerized systems.
